Youth Band on the March!
1 April 2015
We recently supported Wirral Sound, a local group of young people and volunteers who are dedicated to promoting the skills and enjoyment to be gained from performing with a traditional marching band.
The group is organised and led by Bill and Julie McKay who are determined to take the 30 plus band members away this year to a week long summer camp where they would gain important musical and social skills.
Julie told us 'Now that the Primary Schools have virtually stopped music provision due to cutbacks, there is a great need for community based projects and activities'. 'We try to fill this gap in Moreton and the surrounding area. Once they have joined us they don't want to leave.'
Through their tireless efforts Bill, Julie and many volunteers have helped to establish Wirral Sound as one the country's top Traditional Youth Marching Bands. They regularly attend national events and have played at such prestigious venues as the 2012 Olympic Games.
We just hope that our contribution will see Wirral Sound continue to grow from strength to strength. This is another great example of how a few inspirational people are helping build better and more inclusive communities, simply by dedicating their time and energy to supporting our young people.
Wirral Sound is based in Moreton and meet every Tuesday at the Methodist Church. See their website for contact details.
Through its fundraising and grant making the Olivia Rae Foundation aims to support young people on Merseyside in achieving their aspirations through Education and the Arts.
